The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago plans to mount a
major retrospective of the work of Takashi Murakami from June 6, 2017.
“Takashi Murakami: The Octopus
Eats Its Own Leg” is billed as the “first serious survey of his work as a
painter,” and promises to provide an analysis of the artist's relationship with
traditional Japanese art, presenting his works related to folklore and pop
culture, the traditions of Nihonga, Japanese modern painting, and the Tokyo art
scene of the 1980s to the 1990s.
In total about 50 works will be
presented, including some never-before-seen paintings. The exhibition will
continue through September 24, 2017.
