With his latest solo exhibition, "Horizons of Change 2013," Singapore-based, Malaysian artist Chankerk continues his exploration of the urban landscape of the Lion-city, in particular the historic district of the CDB.
The historical buildings of old Singapore are juxtaposed with skyscrapers climbing ever higher, the old and the new brought together with strong, gestural brushstrokes that distort perspectives. The effect highlights the ever changing nature of the Singaporean urban landscape, as well as the speed of the transformation.
The layering of paint creates a sense of tension and melancholy, while patches of orange – that echo the roofs of the traditional shophouses – bring out the vitality of the evolving city-state.
"Horizons of Change 2013" runs until March 7 at Chan Hampe Galleries.
