The stainless steel sculpture was unveiled last week and features an auspicious eight medallions adorned on a frame resembling an infinity loop. The horizontal ‘8’ shaped-sculpture is anchored on a rotating base resembling a coral reef, a reference to a large aquarium that is one of the star attractions of Resorts World Sentosa.
Each medallion holds a symbolic meaning for the resort: a four-leaf clover to represent good fortune at its casino; a globe references the casino and hospitality group’s international presence; a turtle, symbol of longevity; a Tembusu tree references the lush tropical vegetation found on the island; a seahorse symbolizes its marine park; a Chinese junk boat references the maritime museum; a toque hat references the top chefs found in the resort; and finally; and an orchid that represents the national flower of Singapore.
The 50-year-old Bali-based sculptor is better known internationally for his large replica in steel of Formula One cars, often riddled with bullet holes or with words and messages that provide a commentary on society. But Sirait has also done a number of large public installations, particularly in Indonesia.
