ShanghART gallery is presenting an exhibition of Yu Youhan's abstract paintings he has created in recent years.
Born in Shanghai in 1943, Yu Youhan is one of the main artists of Political Pop to emerge in the avant-garde movement in the 1990’s, fusing Chinese iconography and Western artistic expression. His large Pop ARt Mao portraits made an impact on the cultural scene, and has influenced and inspired a generation of younger artists.
After 2000, he shifted back to nature in search of a new paint language. All these new abstract paintings are a far cry from his Pop Mao, but still show his color strengths.
