Opening - Aung Ko's Village @ Esplanade

As part of the Singapore Art Festival, the Esplanade concourse is being transformed into a massive "Kampung" installation measuring 13m (wide) by 7m (deep), that tries to capture typical village life in Myanmar today, in a warm and realistic style. Aung Ko’s Village comes complete with wooden houses, farm animals and a paddy field that has to be watered and maintained every day.

Artist Aung Ko has spent the last two weeks at Esplanade creating his works, assisted by his village neighbour and a handful of migrant workers from Myanmar working in Singapore who volunteered their help during their free time. Taking a village to create art and this strong sense of community involvement is key to Aung Ko’s artistic motivation. The installation is complemented by a photo exhibition and installation in the Esplanade's Jendela studio (Visual Arts Space).
