Gone are the days when Shanghai Tang was primarily targeting the expat crowd with its twist of bright lime and deep purple on traditional looking Tang and Mao jackets. Today, the luxury Chinese brand is looking squarely at its home market and has reinvented itself with a more contemporary look. The latest Menswear A/W 2011 titled "From China with Love" is all about wearability, with muted greys and navy blues, mandarin-collared blazers paired with deep indigo jeans or bright orange trousers for a casual, but very chic look. I wasn't so keen on the elbow patches for the old-school look that is back in fashion but the bright checked cashmere knitted scarf (with vibrant blocks of orange and fuchsia) was a winner, adding just the right colour notes (must have one). There was even a banker's stripes wool blazer, with the mandarin collar, worn with fingerless gloves (with a double happiness symbol), to appeal to the urban warrior who needs to type on his iPad. I love the sliming, long well-cut jackets (which were in sharp contrast to the current trend many designers have embraced to go for short, rather unflattering jackets). Singapore Men's Fashion Week continues until Sunday.
