Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) Nature morte à "L'Espérance" |
Christies will have a preview in at its Hond Kong office Jan 14-15 of its London Evening Sale of Impressionist and Modern Art (Feb 9). In the last few months we've seen a couple of impressionist sales in Hong Kong (for the first time), indicating that Chinese collectors are "maturing" and moving away from their own art to embrace other categories as well. Separately, Edouard Malingue Gallery has announced it will be showing several Picassos during ArtStage Singapore, also next week. The selection of paintings on disply will celebrate a great variety of the Spanish master's unmistakable styles and artistic merits. Taking center-stage will be Study for Two Nudes, a captivating watercolour piece that takes up the iconic palette of the Picasso’s Blue Period. It is a study for the painting Deux femmes nues (Two Nudes), which belongs to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and stands at the nexus of Picasso's diverse pictorial investigations from 1906 to 1907. Equally noteworthy, amongst other highlights in this exhibition, is Head of a Woman with a Hat. Completed by Picasso in 1962 at the age of over 80 years old, this portrait of Jacqueline Roque - his second and last wife - is evidence of an unprecedented artistic vitality in the late period of Picasso's career. Both Study for Two Nudes and Head of a Woman with a Hat have never been exhibited in Asia before.
