Lung Prabang, the former royal capital of Laos, now has another high-end resort. The Alila Luang Prabang opened earlier this month. The all-suite small resort is located in an historic building that was originally built as a governor’s mansion but was later used for a time as a political detention center. The resort’s existing colonial buildings, built between 1910 and 1920, blend with new structures that have been designed to reflect and complement traditional Lao architecture. The interior design is a fusion of French colonial charm with contemporary and modern elements. Each of the 23 suites opens onto a private garden with either a pool or an outdoor pavilion. Two corner pool suites provide exclusive access to a tower with panoramic views across the township towards the mountains.
