Went to the opening of a show of work by Chris Ellis, aka Daze. The graffiti artist was one of the pioneer ‘train bombers’ in New York in the 1970’s but has long since moved on from street painting and watching over his shoulders. Nowadays it’s all legit, on canvas, and available for sale (see pictures below). The works on show are all recent, but the artist has tried to recap the evolution of his style over the past 30 years. The most successful pieces are those that stay true to the original urban spay-painting visuals. I especially like one that incorporates a slice of Singapore’s cityscape piercing through bold and colourful graffiti. …
Within the same exhibition space, Fortune Cookie is giving a chance to local graffiti artists to exhibit. The energy and vibe of that small corner was surprising and many of the paintings were already sold before the opening. I especially liked the skateboarding stencils works incorporating red threads of TR853-1. One to watch....
