In response to a growing Japanese art market, Bonhams has decided to open an office in Tokyo in a strategic move to increase the international auctioneer’s presence in Asia. Bonhams first opened an Asia office in Hong Kong in 2007. The new office should provide the auction house an opportunity to enhance existing relationships with important Japanese clients and develop a new clientele.
The company has a strong Japanese art department in Europe and the USA, with specialist sales each year in London, New York and San Francisco. In 2009, Bonhams London became market leader for Japanese Art in Europe, with the November 2009 sale achieving one of the best results in London for a mixed-owner Japanese sale in almost a decade. The next London auction of Fine Japanese Art will be on May 11
